Nutrition Program

The Nutrition Program provides congregate meal settings to the elderly consumers and home delivered meals to the elderly and adults with disabilities.  We are dedicated to improving, enhancing, and expanding home and community-based services in the Nine Counties of Northwest Tennessee: Benton, Carroll, Crockett, Dyer, Gibson, Henry, Lake, Obion, and Weakley.

Mission Statement   The Nutrition Program's mission statement is to outreach and provide both congregate and home delivered meals, and nutrition education, to the 60 plus population and adult consumers with disabilities.

Philosophy   The Nutrition Program Philosophy is to offer nutritional meals and fellowship to the 60 plus population and adults with disabilities; to work on a personal basis with consumers to reach the goal of service with quality; to encourage independence; to conduct continuous research and development; to enhance our support system and operating services, and; to contribute to the growth in the community by supporting the elderly and disabled adults so they can remain independent and maintain their dignity.

The Staff of the Nutrition Program pledges to do the right thing everyday.  We want our consumer to receive top quality service in the best way we know how.  We welcome comments and are here to serve.  If we do not receive your comments, we will not know what we are doing wrong.  Contact us with any questions or concerns.

Funding  The Nutrition Program is funded in part by a grant from the Tennessee Development District 's Area Agency on Agency and Disability, United States Department of Agriculture, United Way, contributions, and memorials.

Outreach  Outreach is an initial one-on-one contact with older persons and is initiated by the Nutrition Staff.  It is designed to identify and contact isolated older persons who may have unmet service needs and to assist them in gaining access to appropriate services offered by the Nutrition Program.

Nutrition Education  Nutrition Education is provided to offer information to individuals to help increase their knowledge in relation to diet, illness, proper purchasing, preparation, and storage of food.

Contributions are encouraged  Clients receiving a Title III-C meal are asked to make a contribution based on their monthly income.  U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Coupons are accepted.  A suggested contribution schedule is available at all Nutrition sites.  All contributions are confidential and no one will be denied a meal if they cannot make a contribution.  All contribution money is used within the program year to purchase only meals.

Meal caterer  The Nutrition Program will contract with a vendor to prepare and deliver hot meals five days a week, Monday through Friday to each Nutrition location.

Menus  The vendor and the Nutrition Program staff plan quarterly menus to offer variety and stimulate a poor appetite.  Menus are planned to include the recommendation from the MyPyramid, which replaced the Food Guide Pyramid of 1992. These recommendations are from the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans meeting the Dietary Reference Intake for older adults.  Each menu is analyzed to determine that all meals contains a 3-ounce entree, 2(1/2 cup) serving of vegetables and/or fruit

Volunteers  Volunteers deliver and serve both food and friendship.  Volunteering is an excellent way to become acquainted and involved with your community and to receive personal satisfaction.  Volunteer experience is always a good reference in today's job market.  If you would like more information about becoming a volunteer or making a tax-deductible contribution you may call the Northwest Tennessee Human Resource Agency Nutrition program at (731)587-4213.
